The Starr Family Home was built in 1858 by James and Nancy Starr. James was a carpenter and builder, and Nancy was a homemaker. The couple had eight children, four of whom died in childhood. The family lived in the house until 1884, when they moved to a farm outside of Marshall. In 1893, the house was sold to a local family.

The house is a two-story frame vernacular with Greek Revival influences. It has a central hall plan with four rooms on each side of the hall. The first floor rooms are divided by a central stairway. The second floor has two large bedrooms and a smaller room that was probably used as a nursery.

The outbuildings on the property include a kitchen, smokehouse, barn, and carriage house. These buildings were all built by James Starr and were used by the family during their time on the property.

The grounds of the historic site include the original garden that Nancy Starr planted in 1858. The garden features herbs, vegetables, and flowers that were common in 19th century gardens. There is also a small cemetery on the property that contains the graves of four of the Starr children who died in childhood.
